Tacoma Rodent Removal Tip:

Are Dogs Good at Keeping Rats Away?
When we think of a rat's natural predator, only one animal comes to mind. The cat. These moggies are to rats, what lions are to antelope. However, recent research suggests that cats aren't the rat-catchers they're often portrayed to be. Cats will happily hunt mice all day, but rats present a much more formidable prey. Put simply: rats fight back. That means cats often leave them be. They will scare them off, but that's about all.

There is, however, another animal that historically was a rat-catcher par excellence. In fact, they were bred for this very purpose.

I'm talking, of course, about man's best friend. Dogs!

Yes, tenacious terriers such as the Scottish Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier were bred explicitly as ratters. On farms, they'd dig down into rat holes killing up to five rats per minute. Being bigger than cats, rats pose little threat to dogs.

Warding off rats
Rats breed at breakneck speed. Small populations can quickly burgeon into a devastating infestation. Few dogs will be able to make a dent. Therefore, warding off rats is much more effective. In this task, dogs are the equal of any cat, if not better.

Remember, dogs are territorial and loyal. When trained to do a job, they will do it with utter obedience and diligence. Cats… will do their own thing. If they don't feel like catching rats, they won't.

What cats offer is a passive form of deterrence. Rats have evolved to avoid cats at all costs. If they detect a cat in their area, they will spend longer in their burrows and nests. Whether this carries over to dogs is unknown. However, a dog's barking will distress rats, potentially keeping them away from an area.

rodent trapping The best breed of dogs to keep rats away
We've already mentioned two of the best dogs for keeping the rats away. You might find your Yorkshire Terrier adorable, but they're also useful. Given their small size, these dogs are designed to head into small spaces and kill rats. Do this often enough, and the rats will get the message.

Jack Russel Terriers need no explanation. These energetic dogs will flush rats out of their hiding places and send them running for the hills.

Next up are Dachshunds. Being bred for hunting for badgers, voles, and other rodent-like creatures, they use their acute sense of smell to get the job done.

Other breeds to consider include, Lakeland Terriers, German Pinschers, and Rat Terriers. Interestingly, the name Terrier derives from the French word for earth. These dogs are, therefore, capable diggers designed to hunt for burrows.

If you don't have a dog
There is a way to get the benefits of a dog without owning one. All you need to do is play the sound of a dog (or even a cat) on your computer. Doing so gives the impression to the rat that there is a predator in the area. Given that dogs are a natural predator of the rat, they will be scared from venturing out too often. These noises aren't a foolproof method, but they are potentially useful. Dog barks, in particular, are a clearly identifiable sound.

Conclusion
When trained to hunt for rats, dogs can be superior to cats. They will also provide the same passive benefits by acting as your property's resident predator. When rats detect large canines or felines in an area, they are more likely to stay hidden in their nests or burrows. It can also provide a deterrence to rats moving into the area, stopping nests from becoming established in the first place.
